Mission

The purpose of this educational site is to inform 4th-5th grade students and history enthusiasts about the life and history of Fanny Seward. This mission is achieved through the presentation of primary documents, digitized artifacts, and interactive activities for further learning. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services [CAGML-246991-OMLS-20]. The views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this website do not necessarily represent those of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Created by the Seward House Museum with help from the Museum Association of New York, Seymour Library, and the University of Rochester, this site aims to teach, reflect, and relate to modern youth. With an amazing collection of personal items, informal letters, and a diary that spans eight years, the Seward House Museum hopes to shed light on an inspirational historical character and deliver this knowledge to a brand new audience. Not only is Fanny relatable in personality and youthful experience, but she also witnesses a moment in history that is reflective of our current societal issues. Fanny teaches us that children can change the world, one word at a time.

This site splits into three major topics: Fanny’s historical setting, or her world, her everyday life, and her written legacy. Each page contains an overview with linked words to corresponding quotes for more context. There is also a connecting vocabulary page to certain words. Every page also includes some extra interactive activities that you can do from your own home! All quotes are taken from Fanny’s diary and may include various spelling and grammar mistakes which she made herself. The Seward House Museum hopes that this will be a useful resource for learning about and connecting to a less-discussed historical figure from the 19th century.
