Fanny found it difficult to part with her father whenever he would go on trips. Their parting before his nine month trip to Europe in 1859 was especially hard for her.
“I gave the sleeping shoes to father--he asked if I made them and said they were “just the thing,” and amply repaid me with a kiss…I wore the locket he gave me containing his hair on Thursday...as we drew near to the dreaded junction where the separation was to take place I began to find it difficult to suppress my feelings and when at legnth dear Father said “We are almost there” I could not restrain my tears, how tenderly he gave me his hand I can never forget” April 30, 1859
